Voor het februari-nummer van het Duitse magazine ‘Garten + Landschaft’ schreef ik artikel ‘Graben fürs Gleichgewicht’ over het grootschalige Rijksproject Ruimte voor de Rivier. Aanleiding daarvoor was de afrondende fase waarin zich dit project bevond. Tevens verscheen ter gelegenheid daarvan de publicatie ‘Ruimte voor de Rivier. Vellig en mooi landschap’ bij Uitgeverij Blauwdruk. In het artikel wordt ook naar die publicatie verwezen.
[Fragment]‘Most striking feature of the new program is undoubtedly the fact that all projects of Room for the River (Ruimte voor de Rivier) are designed to accept and facilitate the periodical increase of river water running through the country. This seemingly softer attitude towards water illustrates a significant break with waterworks in previous decades. There the common denominator was always the harsh defence against and fighting off the water. The projects of Room for the River are no longer solely designed against, but much more with the water. They accept and combine its presence with other elements and program, such as the beauty of (newly arranged) landscape; but also with new combinations of functions for leisure and living. This togetherness creates an intriguing and new symbiosis of elements that is illustrated by a wide range of new spatial qualities. Obviously, the major target remains the safety of the people living amidst all this water. But, as the official Dutch Special Envoy for International Water Affairs Henk Ovink states, the project proves and underlines once more the role of the country as a laboratory where the actual meaning of living with water is tested on a very high level.” (…)
